  • Revealing mistakes: When Siegfried's car is driving away from the Disney Hall at the end of the movie, the car drives over a bridge, but the background images when the camera is on the inside of the movie do not match. First they are on a street in an area that looks like an industrial zone, then on a camera change they are on the middle of the bridge, but when the camera switches back they are driving through a neighborhood full of houses.

  • Continuity: When Siegfried is kicked out of the car on the bridge, the door flies off with him. However, when the camera switches to back in the car, the door reappears on the car.

  • Continuity: After Agent 99 and Max go through the storm drain, Agent 99 takes off her shoes. However, after they both get through the lasers and Agent 99 is fighting, she suddenly has her shoes back on although she didn't carry them with her through the lasers.

  • Revealing mistakes: Obvious stunt double when Smart bursts through the building in the vehicle.

  • Continuity: Agent 99's white suit gets dirty after being dragged on the airplane banner. Minutes later, the suit is spotless.

  • Continuity: The dark spot on the lawn that Max stops at is not there seconds later when he is talking to the tree.

  • Continuity: At Krstic's party, Agent 99 has on heeled shoes, but when she and Maxwell are heading down to the drainage tunnel, she has on flats; then she returns to heeled shoes when they exit.

  • Continuity: In the scene where Max is captured by Siegfried and Shtarker, a wedding ring appears and disappears from Steve Carell's hand.

  • Continuity: When Maxwell Smart is attempting to escape from jail, the radio in his cell is on. While he is fighting with the guards, it goes off on its own.

  • Continuity: During the scene when Max and agent 99 are riding on the Vespa, Max's suit is seen as torn from the scene before, then in the very next shot has been fixed.

  • Factual errors: In the credits, Leonard Stern is credited as "Cesna Pilot." The proper spelling is "Cessna."

  • Factual errors: The Score of Beethoven's 9th Symphony would not be titled "Ode to Joy". The ode to joy is just the name of the tune, found in Beethoven's sketch books, at the end of the fourth movement.

  • Revealing mistakes: When Max is free falling after 99 lets him go, you can briefly see a suit-colored parachute pack on the stunt man.

  • Continuity: When Max takes the equipment from the museum, we see him take keys, a semi-auto pistol with magazine, and the shoephone. Later in Los Angeles when he pulls his gun in the truck, he's got a snubnose .38

  • Factual errors: When Max and Agent 99 are in Russia and stop at the gas station to steal a car, the sign on the gas station and on the gas pumps says "gazoline". In Russia, gas is called "benzine" not "gazoline".

  • Continuity: When Max talks to the clerk at the bakery, the plate of rolls she places on the counter moves, depending on the shot.

  • Factual errors: At the time of the symphony orchestra concert, the program stated Beethoven's 9th Symphony, and then an excerpt from Mozart's 40th Symphony was heard.

  • Factual errors: During the orchestra concert, when excerpts of Mozart's Symphony No. 40 and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 are heard, there is a cut to the pianist who is shown playing during both pieces. Neither composition calls for a piano part in the score.

  • Continuity: Just before Max falls from the airplane with his Swiss army knife in his mouth. He screams as he is falling, but later he still has the knife at Kristicks house.

  • Continuity: During the I-47 car/plane chase, just after 99's head kick and before Smart's entry, the black GMC Denali SUV briefly changes to a black GMC Denali pickup, with no passenger cab or box on it. It is clear that there is no passenger in the pickup, and the right headlight is different.

  • Continuity: After Hymie staples Larabee's skull at the end of the movie, Larabee and Agent 91 switch positions for the pain scene. 91 is now to Larabee's right.

  • Factual errors: In brief segment with Max in the F/A-18D Hornet, he is wearing an Air Force flight suit noted by the "Air Combat Command" patch. The Hornet is only flown by the Navy and Marines in the U.S.

  • Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When Max jumps out of the plane his hands are tied together. Moments later in air his hands are free again. Max's last shot with the Swiss Army knife crossbow is successful at cutting the strap around his wrists.

  • Continuity: When Agent 23 staples a document Larabee's forehead, Agent 91 is seen helping Larabee both with and without a staple remover in his hand in subsequent wide and close shots.

  • Factual errors: During the plane/SUV chase at the end of the movie, it is said that they are heading south on I-47. There is no I-47 in the US interstate system, and if there was, it would be somewhere in the Midwest, not Los Angeles.

  • Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): The Russian used in the movie (spoken and written) contains many mistakes and absurdities, and sometimes things are completely different from their "translations" into English. For example, in the beginning of the movie, when one suit says to another: "Don't worry. The Americans suspect nothing", what he is actually saying is: "Mr. President, your mother-in-law has arrived". Also, in the scene when Max and agent 99 are hacking into Krstic's computer, the list of shipments lists some absurd items, such as "dining room chart", "zone's rug" and "steel boots of a foot's finger". There is a line with "nuclear detonators" in it though. Another example: in the bakery when Max places detonators one can briefly see a red sticker on a barrel saying "syrup of callus".

  • Revealing mistakes: Bill Romanowski is listed in the end credits as "Air Marshall". "Marshal" - one L - is the law enforcement title. "Marshall" - two Ls - is a proper name.

  • Revealing mistakes: When Max smashes Sharker's face against the retinal scanner, you can see the soft material compress as he hits against it.

  • Continuity: When 99 and Max are at the dance and when the camera pans up the hallway is empty, but when it pans down there are lots of people and a waiter walking through.

  • Continuity: When Max is talking with the clerk in the bakery, a man in a suit and blue shirt can be seen through the window walking up the street towards the bakery. When we cut back to Max again, the man is still walking toward us, only now he is further back than he was.

  • Continuity: When Dalip throws the air conditioning unit off of the bakery, he is standing at an inside corner of the building. When the unit lands on the car, it is in front of a flat store front with no corner visible.

>>> WARNING: Here Be Spoilers <<<

Goofs below here contain information that may give away important plot points. You may not want to read any further if you've not already seen this title.

  • Incorrectly regarded as goofs: SPOILER: When Max breaks out of the jail-cell he goes from prison clothes to a suit and tie in an instant. However, he passes the display of the Control items, one of which is a suit. He takes the suit and puts it on before leaving the museum - it does not show him putting the suit on, but he pauses and looks at it, so it is assumed he puts it on.

  • Factual errors: SPOILER: The orchestral score Siegfried is reading is not correct. There is no chorus part, and the final measure (that triggers the bomb) is clearly not the final measure of the Ninth Symphony. His measure highlighted in red is a full 12/8 bar, whereas the Ninth Symphony ends on the 1st beat with a single D.
